I've slowed down a bit, and missed my initial deadline of 100 drawings by January 1. There are currently 47 drawings in the new series, which I plan to finish by mid-February. Here are some shots from the studio and scans of the three most recent drawings.

Here are drawings 045-047. They are mud dauber wasp nests. I've been meaning to do some drawings of these for a while. Google them. They're these weird little clay sculptures, and aside from the fact that they are filled with vicious wasps, they are pretty beautiful.

I started 100 Drawings two weeks ago and since then, I have made 30 drawings. When I started I wasn't sure what form this project was going to take. I have mailed away many of my first 20 drawings, and this week, I started working on a standard 9"x12" watercolor paper. I bought a stack of 100 sheets, and am going to fill all of them. This is very real for me- I wonder why the things that I like are so much better-more interesting, engaging, dynamic- than the things I make. If I wasn't me and I saw my work would I even like it? Would I even care to look? There have been times when I have stopped making things altogether because I didn't think that what I was doing was intelligent or beautiful or original enough.

Great Grandmother

Recently I visited Asbury Park, NJ with my roller derby team (you read that right). I was excited for this trip in particular, because it brought me back to where my dad's family lives and where my great-grandmother was once famous. You can read her story here.

I decided to follow up on this trip with a series of drawings, and since I broke my wrist and was unable to finish some of the paintings I had been working on previously, it seemed like the perfect time to make some sloppy, opposite/broken hand drawings.

Since I broke my left (read:important) wrist, I have been working at home. Luckily I have a room all to myself and my boyfriend doesn't complain about me covering his pianos with prints. Note the clip lamp taped to the desk: it has a 300 watt bulb ($6 at Home Depot) and at 12" away, I can expose a 12"x18" screen in 20 minutes. Wash out in the tub with a scrub brush, let dry, find a clean spot (there's got to be one somewhere), and print. This is basically the process I use with my students. No light table, no racks, no pressure sprayer, no darkroom. Feel free to comment with questions on this process- and then get to work silk screening at home! Also, these prints are for sale.

After being out of the studio for a bit (home 5 days for Thanksgiving break, hectic schedule, lots of skating practices, and you know...life), I was relieved to get my butt back to the Distillery this week. Naturally, I got all the way to Southie and realized I'd forgotten my keys. But, lo and behold! A light glistened from within the building and I was able to call up to my studiomate, Corey Corcoran, to let me in (the heat was on so high he had to crack a window...thanks, Distillery!) Once safe inside, Corey let me borrow his digital camera to take some shots of work that I had not been able to share yet. Corey saves the day again! Being an artist without a digital camera is not only inconvenient, but totally ridiculous at this point in history. I am working on this.

Here are a few shots of some work from my Invasive Species series. I just made that name up, but I think I might stick with it. This is me fumbling around helplessly with oil paint for the first time in years. Also, I have questionable digital photo editing skills. More to come!

Here's a little bloggo about what I've been up to lately. I usually just post images, but this post is a little more about process. I have a lot of stuff going on right now: collages, watercolors, ink drawings, etc. I'm hoping that as long as I keep making anything it will all eventually turn into something.

Since moving into a new apartment and setting up my new room (a big sort of lounge/music/art/study space), I've been able to work at home. I've been using ink and watercolor and working pretty small. Here is a shot of my desk. Note the cornet which I take breaks to practice:

In the studio, I've been struggling a bit-I've been making lots of drawings and little things, but haven't really put out any finished paintings in a while. Here is a piece I started working on about a month ago. I started out working with gouache. It's the biggest thing I've done in over two years, and the first painting to have a figure in it in quite some time:

Just after nearly filling in the whole bottom of the panel with grass (made with individual brushstrokes), I decided to try working with oil. Everything was really flat and boring and I just kept using the same colors over and over again. I haven't made (finished) a single oil painting since college, and it is definitely not an easy thing to pick up again. Basically, I've been fumbling around a lot, making a mess, and ruining clothes, and the whole process is producing questionable results. I ended up covering all of that initial hard work with a new layer of oil, and now the painting looks like I just started it. However, I feel like I've been making the same neon gouache landscape for about two years now, so I figure any practice which shakes things up a little is bound to be valuable eventually.

Note: My digital camera is broken, so all of these shots were taken with the camera on my MacBook. In real life, these are brighter, with more variation in the color.

Last night I decided to paint one of my collage/sketches (see post below). This is the beginning of my second oil painting- I just drew everything out and started to block in color. I spent about an hour blocking in the whole surface. I try not to work section by section, but rather try to build up everything by layer so that my color and spatial relationships develop together.

Here are some collages I've been doing. My process is like this: Make a drawing I hate, cut it up and make a collage that I hate, cut that up and have a finished collage (meaning some of these took a long time with fairly simple looking results). Some of them are images I printed from the internet onto computer paper and then painted on, others are just cut up segments of paintings. Yesterday I started messing around with Photoshopping as well. I hope to do more of these as starting points for bigger projects/paintings.

Field Kit

Since I'm working a new job and now have an hour off for lunch, I decided to make myself a little field kit. I hate wasting time and I love giving myself projects, so I'm carrying this with me everywhere and spending at least two hours (one before work, one during lunch) drawing each day. This kit includes: a booklet of 4"x6" watercolor postcards, small water color kit, jar of walnut ink, jar of water for ink, jar of water for watercolors, 4 brushes, a pencil, two markers, and a pen. The Distillery Gallery presents "People, Places & Horses," a straight-forward exhibit of four Boston-based painters individually consistent in their chosen subject matter.

People:
Nick Ward's close-up portraits reveal exaggerated elements of facial characteristics mixed with sparse use of text or vivid color as a backdrop. Each work is an uncontrived study of texture and form punctuated by the suggestion of everyday routine.

David Wooddell exhibits a clear appreciation of his predecessors and a mature, diligent work ethic by painting live models in a modernist manner. The focus of his rich, heavy-bodied figure studies balances between the subject and the individual brush stroke, resulting in luminous portrayals of the human form.

Places:
Aimee Belanger blurs the lines between imagination and reality with landscapes based on photographs, memories, and dreams. Her juxtaposition of stark architectural elements with colorful organic settings results in imagery of places that may or may not exist.

and Horses:
Monica Nydam's "Horse Series" entertains the viewer with painterly renditions of snapshots involving the subject. While some pieces use thick linear brush strokes to create "pixelated" visions of the mare or stallion, others involve hints of distortion or motion. Each work shares a candid, stolen-moment quality with the next.

This Sunday I will be hanging a solo show at the Gulu-Gulu Cafe in Salem, MA. The show opens on October 1st and will be up for six weeks. The show will include work from the past year and a half as well as some newer paintings. I'm really lucky to be showing during Salem's ultra-spooky Halloween season, so hopefully lots of people will be in the area to check it out!

In these trying economic times, continuity often demands a hit to ones pride, or a duck from moral standards. BEG BORROW STEAL assembles the work of a variety of emerging artists who embrace theft and appropriation as key elements in their creative process. No artist works in a vacuum, all are reliant on imagery and concepts taken from outside sources. From the constant flow of contemporary pop culture, to the long history of artistic creation, to the inflated production of the economy, these artists depend on a constant exchange of ideas, materials, and conceptual stimuli to fuel their work. Several pieces found in BEG BORROW STEAL incorporate donated or cannibalized resources: a grandmother’s excess yarn, a friend’s vacation photographs, or trash left along the side of a street. BEG BORROW STEAL artists recycle pre-existing aesthetics from various sources including, classic cartoons, country western stars, or a pair of jeans. Conceptually these artists thrive on what has preceded them, as wells as that which surrounds them. The artists of BEG BORROW STEAL employ consumption as a means of making, and in doing so participate in the complexly of the current social and economic condition.

BEG BORROW STEAL is a group show of 28 young artists, juried and curated by Aaron M. Segal, a MassART graduate. Aaron is currently the art preparator of the LaMontagne Gallery. His objective for the show was to organize a group of peers, who may at this point in their careers still have limited access to commercial galleries, and give them the opportunity to show in one of Boston's best. In the spirit of the show, the LaMontagne Gallery has been begged borrowed and stolen while Russell LaMontagne is on vacation, hopefully he won't mind.

Re-Paint Opening

So the reception for Re-Paint was last night, and it was pretty great. Thanks to everyone who came out to see the show, and to those who hung out afterward for that lively discussion about the local gallery system.
Gallery 263, if you haven't seen it, is a quaint little storefront located at the corner of Pearl Street and Putnam Avenue in Cambridge, MA. It was founded when co-director Annie Newbold decided to turn her former studio space into a warm, inviting, new gallery space. The show was juried by Annie, Jed Speare (director of Studio Soto), and newcomer Laura Francis. It was Laura's curatorial debut, and judging by the incredible turnout, and the generally positive response to the work, it was a success.The show was fairly diverse and featured both new and locally established artists. Obviously, there was some work that I liked more than others, but for the most part, I was impressed with the selection, and found quite a few of the pieces to be astonishingly good. And if anyone wants to get me a present, I'll take about $500 cash, because there was more than one painting that I was sad to leave behind.

Repaint @ Gallery 263

I was just notified that I got into Gallery 263's first juried show, Repaint! The concept was pretty cool: find an old painting at a thrift store or yardsale and paint/collage/whatever over half of it, leaving the other part untouched. My roommate Aaron Segal will also be in the show (see the painting 'Quantum of Solace' on his site-awesome). The show will be up from July 9- August 1, and I'll let you know when I get more details about the opening. Gallery 263 is located at 263 Pearl St, Cambridge, MA and is open Thursday-Sunday from 11am-6:30pm or by appointment.

The Distillery

I am so happy to be back in Boston (seriously...I can't contain myself) and that is partially because I was able to move back into my studio at the Distillery. I love working there, my artist neighbors are great, and it's awesome just to have a space that's solely for work (my attempts to paint at home never quite work out). The first week I moved in was Open Studios (sorry, I didn't get pictures of this one) and I'm finally settling in to painting. I am working on a new painting-you may recognize the image from the wall painting below, and I'm in the 'I hate this and nothing's working' stage. It's still very excited about the piece, and I'll let you know when I pull out of it. These pictures were taken with my iSight camera, so sorry for the quality. I also don't have Photoshop, so if you can, you know, hook a girl up.

DISPARITION

So, it's been a while, but I'm ready to get this bloggin ball rollin (ugh...I almost made a bad pun about 'blogrolls'...sorry, guys). Ahem...Onto the news:

I am currently in a group show called 'Disparition' curated by my friend and fellow Glasgow School of Art alum, Alex Jacobson. The show is in Portland, ME at Zero Station, which is definitely one of the coolest gallery spaces I've ever seen. I can't do it much justice, but in short, it's crisp, modern, bright, and beautiful. The show features works influenced by collage and includes two artists from Maine, four from Scotland, my roommate Jon Skibo, and me. I showed a new and improved version of Buckface, and I was also asked to do a wall painting, which I only had 24 hours to complete. It was definitely stressful, but a good exercise, and while it's (obviously) not as finished as I'd like it to be, I was generally pleased with the results. Pictures below. Disparition will be on view at Zero Station, 222 Anderson Street, Portland, ME, until next week.
